Why is my dog who is 14 years old eating faeces, she has never2007-11-25 2:56:27

Check her stool for worms or discoloration.

If you don't worm her she needs it anyway.

She is hungry.

Believe it or not, there is a term for eating stool or eating feces. It's called Copraphagia and it is more common than you think. One of the main reason feces may appeal to a dog is because it sometimes contains partially digested food. Regardless, you should not let your dog develop this habit. It is difficult to break. Eating feces can also cause intestinal problems and stools carry germs and parasites.

What can you do about it? Several things. I know it is easy to open the door and let your dog have free roam of yard when its potty time, but right now, walk your dog, even in the yard, using a leash and a collar. After Molly eliminates, if she shows an interest in her stool, execute the corrective jerk with a firm "NO." Use the pooper scooper immediately and then let her enjoy the yard.

Make sure your dog has the proper diet and a good quality food that provides sufficient nutrients. Check with your vet. He may recommend dry food with a little water. Get a good brand of food and stick with it. Don't change the diet week-to-week. Later on if you add a canned supplement to the dry dinner, make sure the canned food does not exceed 25% of the mix.

If your dog is eating poop.. she is lacking in some vitamans.. try a dog multi vit. crushed in her food for a start.. And if she is looking for more food see if she eating enough out of her bowl and how often you are feeding her.. with a dog that age you might want to do blood work at the vets office to see is everything is ok...

Is it her own faeces that she's eating? If so, its to do with her digestion, which will have changed as she's got older and won't be working quite as well as it used to. So, the stuff that comes out the other end isn't all waste - there is still some actual food there, (although it may not seem so to look at it) and therefore some vitamins etc which as far as she's concerned could do with going through her body again to get the most out of the food.
