Look in his ears. If you see black gunk/dots it is mites.
Clean his ears out with a Q tip and mineral oil.
If it continues, you will need to see your vet.
It sounds like an ear infection. Clean his ear really good with a cotton ball and some hydrogen peroxide and if you get a lot of black/brown gunk and it smells then you need to have the vet look at him and get some ear drops.
My dog has ear problems all the time. Try to see if you can take a look inside but DO NOT put anything in your dogs ear b/c you could hurt the ear or pop an ear drum. Take it to the vet right away. It could be anything from an infection or some kind of irritation. The vet will tell you exactly what it is, and probably give ear drops or some kind of medicine. My dog has had several ear problems, but after the vet and the medicine, she has always gotten better!
He may have ear mites, or an infection. Check to see if the ear looks dirty, especially if you see something that looks like coffee grounds - that's ear mites. (My cats get 'em sometimes.) Also, check to see if there's a sour or rotten smell coming from the ear, as that could indicate a bacterial infection. Is the ear hot or especially tender? Those would also indicate infection. For those, you'd want to visit a vet.
However, if it's ear mites, that's no big deal. Get some boric acid (from the first aid section of your local Wal Mart) and mix it with water into a paste. Put this into the ear and moosh the outside of the base of the ear around in order to work the paste in. Leave it in and repeat in a few days if necessary. Ear mites are yucky and itchy but they're not scary-bad.
He may have fluid in his ear or more than likely yeast growing in his ears. This requires otomax to kill the yeast and a cleaner that will dry out the ear canal. It has a distinct odor to it if you smell it kinda musty. thats yeast. and Black gunk...if you stick a kleenex in there and he/she is very iritated and tries to itch or yelps its a yeast infection.
He could have a bug in his ear, or even a bug bite. Is he scratching, too? Does he have ffod/environment allergies?
