Why is my springer getting nasty2007-11-25 2:56:31

my boy springers who now is 4 yrs old is snapping at my kids and others i dont know what to do can anyone help please thanks

Has it been to the vet lately? for a check up?. A sheltie of mine started to cry out if we went to touch her, started to shy away. Took her to vet, turned out she had broken tooth that was absessed, needed to be removed.

Other times when she acts a little stiff, I've taken her to doggie chiropractor, adjustments have made her feel soooo much happier.

Something physical might be bothering your springer, if this just started happening.

So this is just a guess.

I'm assuming the boys may have played rough with the dog as a puppy (Not unusual at all)? Now the dog has matured, perhaps it's not getting the play time it needs or had in the past?

Pretty much the animal is saying "I want to play".

Anouther side couldbe that the dog simply feels he is the ruler of the pack. This could make the dog think it's his place to hand out dicipline (doggie style) to his subordinates to keep them in line.

The cure for both the above is training and dicipline. You may have reached a point where the undoing of bad habits willbe harder than the actual training of new acceptable behavior.

The first thing you need to do is make a trip to the vet to rule out any medical reason for this change in behavior. Something as mundane as an ear infection can cause dogs to act aggressively if they are in enough pain. Or it could be a more serious metabolic disorder (bloodwork is really the only way to diagnose these accurately).
