Why isnt my jack russell brave2007-11-25 2:56:50

aren't jack russells known for their courage and bravery? my dog is scared of anyone touching him except family and when other dogs snarl or bark at him because he's being to nosy. but he does grow and bark when he sees someone he doesnt know at the door.

You are right, by breed standard Jacks are fearless. Sometimes to a fault. But as stated by some responders all dogs have different personalities just as people do. However, you can modify his behavior a bit. But if he is naturally timid it will take LOTS of dedication to help him overcome this.

First, how old is the dog? If he is under a year there is nothing to worry about. Second, how much interaction does he get with other dogs/people? Third, what do you do when he gets scared? If you console him he will continue to act this way. If you want him to 'toughen up' you must WORK him. Long walks, games of fetch, or anything where he feels like he has a job. Visit a JRTCA event. (www.terrier.com) or read the forums here for some good ideas on putting your pup to work. He will develop confidence through work and companionship.

Well, if you can rule out any sort of physical abuse, or any other traumatic event...then it's simply his/her personality. Love the dog for it's faults...unless of course his fault is eating small children.
