First of all it's not called a PERIOD. It's a heat cycle. It's not uncommon for the first heat cycle to be around a year of age. She also could have had a silent heat or had very little blood and kept herself so clean you just didn't know it.

She could have gotten with a male dog, even a fence can't keep two dogs apart from making puppies. However I have a cat and a dog who never make any mess when in heat, not a single spot so your dog might just be very clean even if she went into heat before it might be that now that she's older she's leveled out and isn't messy or she just learned how to keep herself clean. She also might be having a false set of puppies sometimes they can do things like that, or her timing could be such that she only goes into heat at times twice or three times as long apart then most dogs do it's not always clock work.

Take her to the vet and have them say for sure.
