Why punish the dog Its not fair2007-11-25 2:56:52

I tried, again, to train the dog myself and he constantly bared his teeth and growled at me when I asked him to do anything (even as simple as walk beside me on a leash!). He threatened my husband whenever he got close to him, growling and baring his teeth, even if my husband was going to feed him. He escaped from the run in which we kept him and jumped into the open window of a Suburban parked in front of our house. When the owner of the Suburban went to get in his vehicle, the dog wouldn't allow it. I managed to get the dog out of the Suburban so the owner could drive his vehicle, but the dog, still, had no respect for humans.

Now I had a dilemma, I had a 3 year old grandson coming to stay with me for a month and a dog who hated people. What should have been done with a dog like this? This was a 180 pound Great Dane, about five times the size of a 3-yr old boy, who had already bitten two adults and resisted all training. To me, it was not a difficult decision, euthanize the dog, or risk him killing a child. I felt it would have been totally irresponsible to pass this dog on off to someone else to be a danger to them, their families, and their neighborhood.

I currently have three Great Danes and have had 12 in my lifetime. I have never seen another one as mean and nasty as that one and I pray I never will. I have not lost one night's sleep over my decision. I love my dogs, but, their lives will never be placed before the life, safety, or well-being of a child. I'm sure my cousin, whose 10 month old son was killed by her mother-in-law's dog, wishes more people were of my mindset.

You are so right!I do agree that a dog owner and thier dog should be punished.But killing a dog for something it was not trained right for.You have to say maybe the dog should get training and help but death right now that you have pointed that out i feel terrible i never thought of that.Maybe we can put a stop to this.Stand up for our rights.If a dog hurts a human it probally had a good reason.The human probally did something.Maybe the dog will get a new owner and the owner should have to pay for medical bills.But killing a dog is not right.Call your local humane center for more info.Hope i can help.
