Why the pitt
The breed is a mix between the American bull dog and a pit terrier. They were bred to fight. It's innate in them. Owners can definitely mold their behaviours. Some owners are just not strong enough owners for a pitt and the dogs aggression level rises above that of its owner. The owner gives the dog up for lack of control. This happens with rotts, shepherds, dobes..all breeds of guard type dogs. Unfortunately, pitts aren't guard dogs, they're fighting dogs. This can be bred out of them. The pit ban in many community will help with this.
My dog, an English mastiff, is one of the laziest, most docile dogs in the world. BUT..it's history dates back to the molossus dogs who were trained for battle and even ate Christians in the Roman colisseums! They were used in England to guard against poachers.
How did their rep and true gentle nature evolve? They were almost extinct. Enthusiasts bred them back. That meant mastiff lovers took the best dogs and bred them for their good points. Perhaps the same must be true for the pitt bull.
Its s sad that the dogs have been neglected so bad by either fighting them or not knowing how important socialization is that they end up in the pound and the euthanized because the are not adoptable.. It really sucks. the people that turn these dogs in should be fined of some kind for having made them that way.. or something... I agree with you..a similar situation is. its just like when a mother gets her kids taken away, found "unfit", kids get adopted out, and then she goes out and gets pregnant again... the state cant touch the new kid but that kid should be taken away also, and mom should be steralized!! I say that because I am in the process of adopting my nephew and MY sister just found her another man and IS pregnant already and the state cant touch her.. My nephews siblings went to their biological father but my nephews father is just not a right fit... so in short people should be screened before having a dog of any sort. it should be a process... starting with a plant, then maybe a fish, then maybe a dog/cat.. if the first 2 stay alive and well for a period of time then they should have to take a class of some sort to be a pet owner.just like adopting a child... you know a pet is so much like having a kid. and if people dont see it that way they should not own a pet... ok off my high horse.smile
some lok at the pit and the rottweilers as being tough, brute and manly ,more like bling than a pet.the owners have no buisness with animals, the way they train them is soppose to make them look big and bad, when in reality they look like real damn idiots,i raise and breed rotties so this is a sore subject, when the breed is so sweet and loving ,but you never see that side on tv,just what bad owners trained
Because most people are either ignorant or want to change things to please them, without any regard to how something was created and the reasons why. If we all accept the genetics of the pit bull breed, why the dog was created in the first place and take responsibility for that dog, everything will be fine. Most pit bull owners, however, live in some fantasy land where genetics do not exist and only "bad people"do. WRONG!!!! The dog was bred to fight other animals, accept that and treat it as such. Do not try to breed that out of the dog and change it to please you, that is what has happened with the Doberman, the Rottie, the Shepherd, and on and on. People took the working drive out of these breeds simply because they could not have a dog like that and deal with it. Mind you, no one forced them to get it in the first place. The same thing is happening with pits. People are not recognizing what they have, what the breed was meant to do in the first place and then they complain when it happens or they totally deny it. Accept responsibility for what you have and your actions concerning that dog. Only then can we see things change, only then can we talk about how nice the breed is. Until then, all people will see and remember and talk about are the things that people keep denying here daily and blame others for the dogs actions and the breed will keep on getting banned til there are no pits left. Sad.
I agree with you completely. Years ago it was the Doberman that was villified by all. I have a 2 year old (his2nd b-day is in three days!) Staffi/rotti cross and he is the best dog ever. Highly intelligent, loyal, and lovable! I have three kids that he plays with daily as well as my 11 year old St.Bernard/Shepard cross! Hopefully people will come to realize it is bad owners and not bad breeds!
Because it is easier for them. Why would some humans want to own up to their mistakes, after all we are the so called "superior being". It could never be a humans fault we always take the easy way out. But in truth it is people's fault and irresponsiblity that caused the problem. The Pit Bull is a great breed that has been exploited for cheap cruel human pleasure, and it is very sad. Our Pit Bull is the best dog, he is the sweetest natured dog you will ever meet and he lives up to the TRUE AND FACTUAL breed standard. He is very loving, devoted and adores kids. Humans need to take responsiblity for their actions that caused teh problem, and humans need to be punished for their crimes and not an innocent dog who was doing what it was trained to do.
Some people get pits for all the wrong reasons never giving thought just what a pit is. They are not fashion statements, they do not make good graud sogs, you need to make them so dangerous they are that way even to the owner, people want to look tough, or worst of all for fighting. They never consider just what instinks the breed as and have no idea now to deal with them. Then their are people who just need something to abuse and a dog no matter the breed works. Pits are also the in dog right now, a few years back it was dalmations and the pounds were full of those. There are a lot of backyard breeders out there breeding pits to make a quick buck and they have no idea what they are doing. Beleive me it tkaes more than letting two dogs go at it to make a high quailty puppy. Add to this that pits are the choice of drug dealers and street gangs and you have a recipe to get some killed and it is the 95% of good owners of pits that get punished by haveing laws banning thier pets.
by nature pitts are agressive. i don't care who raises them. it is the same that a shih tzu is very stubborn. its nature, not the media. it is the same story people say oh my pitt is the sweetest thing. that is because it is family and then they wonder why one day the dog bites one of the cousins that comes to visit. there are some that are breed to fight, there are some that are abused, there are also cocker spanials that are vicious is someone going to sit and tell me that a little old lady breed it that way.
most often punk@$$ kids raise the animals to fight and abuse the hell out of them. i cant see how anyone can do that cuz i LOVE pits
