Why wont my bassett hound be quiet2007-11-25 2:56:53

he barks at nothing! and he won't be quiet, any tips on how to make him be quiet??? He's driving me insane!

Answers:

Well, quite honestly, because he's a bassett hound!! That's what they do! Any type of hound dog is quite to vocalist. You really don't want to reprimand him for doing what comes naturally.

All dogs bark, but hounds bark/howl/etc at pretty much anything. It's like when they were hunting they want to let their master know that they found the fox or the rabbit ...etc.

So he's saying "I found the...leaf! I found a dog! I found a person!!!" He's excited!

You could try saying "no!" or "shush!" when he barks, many people recommend a water/spritzer bottle to spray on them. It worked for my BIL's shepard. But personally I would want them to repect and listen to my command not a water bottle.

Sorry I don't have much advice, but it's simply the breed and theres not much you can do about it!

Because bassetts are noisy dogs. What do you mean bark. bassetts howl more than anything.

Every time he "barks" spray him with a water bottle he will get the hint that he is not supposed to bark.

OR

Get used to it. That breed is just like that and if you wanted a dog that didn't bark too much than you should have gotten a different breed.

LOL, sorry, but what did you expect from a "HOUND". Their hearing is impeccable. What you might think is 'nothing', could be a mile or better down the road!
He maybe lonley. I have a beagle that was like that when she was young. Then I bought another dog and she stopped barking. But every once in a while she will bark, It's a hunting dog thing. Your dog is a hunting dog to! Do not try barking collars, They do not work!
i think it's the nature of the breed. We used to board dogs at our office and we had a BH as a regular who would get all of the other dogs to "sing" too.
Well, first of all, exercise!! If hes barking due to any type of anxiety or loneliness, excercise is the key ingredient. Also, the nature of the basset is to bark and howl when he has found a scent. If he smells a frog, and then he sees it or finds it, he will bark and howl to let you know he has found the scent he was smelling. If he is barking at night and keeping you and your neighbors awake, the best thing would be to crate him inside or in the garage where all the fun smells from the outside wont interfere with his sleep. Exercise always is a key factor. They need the cardio just like us.

Also, if he is lonely, get a friendly dog from the shelter. I say a dog and not a puppy, since I dont know how much puppy training you might want to do at this stage.

Good luck, and remember, they dont call them hound for nothing!
