Why wont my dog mate with a female dog2007-11-25 2:56:53

I have a 2 yr old cairn terrier, he was asked to be used as a stud, he has already sired 1 litter (took him ages to actually do it) I agreed, they arrived at my house, the female dog was ready, tail to the side etc. My dog kept getting on and of,alot of thrusting, but not actually mating with her, this was a couple of hours. The female dog went home, and we arranged for her to come back again, the same happened again he was trying but never actually entered her, he would get on then of, she was definately ready for him. This is not the 1st time I have tried to mate with him. Is there such a thing as low sex drive in a dog?

If you have done all the things a good breeder needs to do such as proving him in the show ring, making sure he is perfectly healthy etc then rather than little visits with his female friends most breeders take the female to stay with the male for a few days. It's best not to free breed them but when they have bred, miss a day then let them breed again. Then the female goes back home.

Not all males will want to breed. I have known quite a few bredders who have had wonderful dogs who just would not or could not do the deed for no apparent reason.

I would just get him neutered. An un-neutered male that is not breeding is prone to many cancers. I know you would not want that for your lil guy.

No, the only reason your dog could not want to mate is because for one, it's not mating season yet, and/or it has been neutered.

Did you have him checked by a vet to make sure he is healthy with no hereditary defects to carry on to his puppies? Is she taller than him? A male will know when she is truely ready not just flirting with him. You may have to artificial inseminate them.

The dog might have diabetes which can contirbute to your problem. Have him checked out by a vet.

The female dog may have something wrong with her that he can sense. She might be diseased or something. Ask them for vet records!

There are lots of reasons why matings aren't successful. Was this b!tch a maiden? She may have a stricture which prevented him from mating. Some b!tches will stand for a dog even though they are not ready & your dog may have known this. Some dogs won't mate when other people are around, some will only mate when their owners are there. Some dogs just like to do things in their own time. This is why it's always wise to have an experienced stud handler in your breed around - mating 2 dogs isn't always as straight forward as it seems.
