Why wont my dog stay home
We have a puppy, he is about 10 months old and we are having one heck of a time keeping him in the fence. We have repaired all the holes he has dug, replaced all the gates he squeezed out of. So, now he jumps over the fence. Our fence is 4 ft tall in some places and 5 ft tall in others. I can't afford to replace the fence. Why doesn't he want to stay in the yard. It's big, almost an acre, lots of room and toys. He is fixed and well treated. We play every chance we get. Yet everytime I go into the house, he escapes. I really need suggestions as my b/f wants to put him in a kennel/run. I want that as a last resort.
Answers:what breed? if he has any hunting dog in him ( beagle, retriever, spaniel) that would explain alot.. he needs more training... i wouldn't leave him unnattended in the yard, if need be, tie him when you go inside.. habits are hard to break and it sounds as if this has become a habit
try an electiric fence the ones where it will shok him/her and avoid him/her getting close enough
well, it's a big world out there and there are lots of great smells to check out. this is a behavioral issue best addressed by a professional. have you considered a pet containment system?
Some dogs are used to getting a lot of excersize so you might consider taking your dog for a long run or hire a dog walker to really work your dog until he gets really tired. Even though he has a big yard doesn't mean that he will run all by himself. He also might be trying to get out because he wants to discover new areas and see new sights. Usually puppies are that way. I would recommend one or more walks or runs a day. And let him sniff around a little too. It will also be a great bonding experience for you and your new dog.Good Luck!
proably because your not giving it good care or freedom
Chessies are escape artists. I've seen them scale an 8' privacy fence. Instead of replacing the fence, I would hotwire it top and bottom. If you have a Tractor Supply Co. That would be the best place. I have Bloodhounds and the same thing happens with big males. I have gone to stock panels for fencing too. They are about $20 ea. for a panel 48"h X 16'L. They can't climb it. They can climb or go under chain link and they will just pop the welds on roll fence.
They are great dogs, but wicked smart. Tell the boyfriend that he needs more exercise, preferably swimming.
