Why wont our local SPCA work with rescue groups2007-11-25 2:56:54

Instead of getting our dogs locally we have to have transport to get our dogs because our local SPCA won't work with rescues. Instead they will euthanize the dogs.

My sister-in-law is not an animal lover and worked at Roswell Park Cancer Institution where they do research on animals. She asked the guy in charge where they get their dogs from and he told her one of the places was the SPCA. I don't think it's true, I hope it's not true but sometimes I wonder ...

Must be some kind of money motive. Some places sell euthanised dogs and cats to dogfood companies. (fact) Many sell dogs to research centers where they do lots of tests (fact)

Also, many people are lazy, and would rather kill a living creature than fill out a little bit of paperwork

SPCA's are individually run, they are not under any one organization. So some are "kill" shelters and some are "non-kill". Some of them are delighted to work with rescues, and others can't be bothered to take the time to make a phone call that would save an animal's life. It all depends on the volunteers doing the work. Not many shelters can afford paid staff.

If you want changes made, either volunteer there, or become a member of the board of directors.

You never know. Some groups think that if the animal is going to die anyhow, why not sell them and let them be used for research. Doesn't mean it's right, but it definitely does happen.

Some shelters do sell to labs. In fact, there was just something in the news (CNN?) about tougher restrictions on how labs get their animals (which mentioned shelters)...it was related to lost or stolen pets ending up in labs.
