Why would a female dog eat her own newborn puppies2007-11-25 2:56:55

This is the third time she gives birth. The first time, she gave birth to 5 puppies all of which eventually died but she did not eat. The second time, she gave birth to 4 puppies, 2 of which survived. But this time, all 4 puppies were dead when I found them. The dog is kept outdoors and it seems that she gave birth sometime this morning. I found them tonight at around 9pm, all 4 of them dead and missing body parts. It definitely seems she ate these. Why would she do this?

It saddens me that you let her keep having puppies. It saddens me she is kept out side..It saddens me that you don't know when she gave birth. Why haven't you gotten this poor dog spayed or give it to someone who will at least care.

Stress is the usual reason. Why haven't you gotten her spayed, since she obviously isn't having proper luck with breeding.

Normally I hate when people leave rude comments that doesn't even answer someone's question. But this time it deserves it. They are right...if you knew she kept getting pregnant and wasn't taking care of the puppies, you should have gotten her fixed. Expecially if she is an outside dog...which is sad to even begin with. If you knew she was pregnant...and had trouble in the past, you should have brought her in to keep an eye on her when she got close this time. What if she would have had complications and died? You should give your dog to someone who can properly take care of her.
