Make sure the breeder is a good one, and not a puppy mill, or you will be heartbroken. Ask to meet the pup's parents. This will be a good indicator of what the pups will be like, and can help you in finding a breed.

Also, if you would consider adoption, you can check out http://petfinder.com for all kinds of dogs, all shapes, sizes, and ages. I recommend something four years older and up for you, so you can have a cuddler that's not too hyper.

Also, try looking up rescues in your area on google: [city name] [breed] [rescue] ex: "Atlanta doberman rescue"

Also, please keep in mind that 25% of shelter dogs are PUREBRED. Please consider contacting your local ASPCA or animal shelter and asking to put your name on a waiting list for a certain breed if you have your heart set on one..
