Will a chihuahua use a litter box in the house

i have heard this could be done for a small dog but has anyone tried it or know if it really works does the dog know to use it like a cat or how would you get it used to that

Yes, litter box training and pee pads both work. The key, however, is the age of the dog when introduced. Puppies that are introduced to litter boxes at 7 weeks of age will go out of their way to find their litterbox to use within a few days. The older a puppy, the longer it takes. If your dog is an adult before you introduce him or her, it may not ever accept the litter box. This is a learned behavior, and toilet behavior is learned at a very early age. Once learned, changing the behavior takes patience and time.

I have found that the Feline Pine brand litter is most effective in controlling order because it is basically pellets of pine wood. You only put an inch of pine litter in the litter box, and be sure to get a small box for a chihuahua. If it is a male, you will get a slightly larger box once he begins to lift his leg, so he will still keep the urine in the box. DO NOT use a covered litter box. Remove solid waste immediately. Once there is solid waste in a litter box, most puppies will not use the box unless the solid is removed.

To teach box use--put puppy in litter box when it first awakens in the morning and quietly hold it there as you say "potty". It will likely do nothing, so let go of it. Once it begins to squat to eliminate, very quietyly pick it up and calmly place in litter box as you say "potty>" Repeat throughout the day during a weekend, and it will usually sink in for them by the end of the weekend. Remember how often your dog usually goes and what times in order to particularly remind them of the litter box during those times.
