Will an English Mastiff grow up socially akward if he lives with a single guy2007-11-25 2:56:34
I'm thinking about buying an english mastiff and need to know for sure that he'll grow up ok just living with me. Would prefer a breeder or a single person with one to answer.
Answers:Just make sure you SOCIALIZE him!! That is the biggest problem. I didn't get my mastiff until he was four months old and had already missed the 'critical period'. Make sure he sees all sorts of people (races, clothing, hats, etc), things, animals...
AND make sure you take him to a puppy kindergarten class or something of that nature. You don't want a 160 - 200+ lb dog pulling you around!
If you do all that ... you should be just fine!
No I don't think so. Just give him alot of attention
He should be fine. treat him good and dont beat him.
Surely you will socialize your dog. Right? You will take him to dog parks and to PetSmart. Right? If you keep him cooped up in your house without introducing him to other people and other dogs, thenYES he will be anti-social.
Take him everywhere you are able to take him especially within the first year of his life to keep him well rounded. Allow kids to come up and pet him and get in his face as well as other dogs and people. If you do that, he should be a perfectly normal adult, just keep him social
no matter what breed if a dog is not socialized with other dogs/people it will be socially akward. As long as you take it out walking from a young age, to some kind of puppy class or if you cant afford/dont have the time for that i dont know about where you are located but in Aus we have off leash area's in most cities/sububs where dogs can be off leash in an enclosed area and just run around with other dogs. There is a second area inside the closed off area for dogs that need to be kept seperate (e.g biters or just dogs that are learning about other dogs).
not if you train him well and socialize a lot.
No dog should grow up socially awkward if you socialize him with other dogs and walk him a lot. Large dogs especially should have plenty of walks anyways! Take him to obedience classes right away and walk him for at least 30 minutes every day, and it shouldn't matter at all if you live alone with him or not!
He should be fine. I'm neither, but my friend is an OEM Rescue Director:

No, he;ll be fine, just socialise him with kids well if you want to avoid any problem.
