Will having my dog fixed keep him in my yard
My dog is a 2 year old male boxer, we have lived in Vegas up until about 10 months ago then we moved to Idaho. This is his first spring and first time with a yard ( 1 acre) and no fence. Up until the end of winter he stayed in the yard when we let him out now he runs to the neighbors' houses. He just runs around and explores, doesn't fight with other dogs or anything he just wants to meet other people. Is getting him fixed the way to go or should we try a high frequency fence (we rent and cant put a fence in..) Any other ideas?
Answers:Neutering him will lessen his desire to roam, but he may have gotten bug to run already. However, it is definately a good thing to try...and then get a invisible (electric) fence. Maybe the two together will curb his desire to roam.
No But Yes If You train The Dog It Will Stay In The Back Yard
electric fence is your answer. Getting your dog fixed will mean that he cannot procreate.
Getting him fixed would probably help keep him in your yard. Without all of those hormones he will be more obedient and less likely to roam in search of mates and territory.
If he's leaving the yard to get the ladies, then fixing him will probably fix the problem.
Another possibility is he's bored out in the yard by himself. Do you leave him out there for long periods of time? Try making it fun for him to stay in the yard by spending time with him out there. Fetch is always a good time...
Having your dog neutered is a good idea for your dog's health and happiness, if for no other reason. It will keep him from wandering in search of a mate, however, he will probably still leave the yard for other reasons. You ether need to teach him to stay in the yard or put up a fence. Electric fences work for a while. Most pets will get out, eventually, and once they learn that they can get through, they will continue to do so.
yes, getting him fixed will help with roaming, less chances of him getting cancers and he will be happier and healthier! its a great idea to do, but it might not make him stay in the yard. the best idea after getting him fixed would be to train him.. .I trained my lab mix to stay on our yard. you make them sit at the edge of the grass or where ever you don't want them to leave, and you make them stay. if he gets up and walks, move him back to the edge and tell him to stay... keep this up and soon he wont be leaving his yard. but of course getting him fixed will help!
I would get him fixed... It should help but even if it doesn't it would be better to keep him from breeding.
If you let your dog run loose, you need to get him neutered. Un-neutered dogs get hit by cars and worse when they go off to fill up the shelters with more unwanted "whoops" litters.
Please remember that this world is not designed so that you can do this. Your neighbors will certainly not appreciate the mess that your dog will leave -and in many towns, there are laws against what you're doing. Please be responsible and think about the safety of your dog.
