Will it hurt puppies to start on wet puppy food2007-11-25 2:56:35

My dog just had puppies last Monday and the vet said to feed my dog puppy food and now that the puppies eyes have opened up they are starting to nibble on the wet puppy food will that hurt the puppies?

if they r a week or two let them be on mother feed after 4 weeks u start giving him soaked puppy food & milk

Hello, am kinda confused, the puppies are about a week old & going for the puppy food, if this is so, it's not good for the puppies...they need to be @ least 4 weeks old & if they don't nurse enough, it's not good for them or the mom - as she will stop producing the milk they need if they don't nurse enough, then you have bigger problems, so no puppy food fo pups till they are @ least 4 weeks old, preferrably 6 weeks old ..Take Care :)

Wet dog food as in canned food, or wet dogfood as in you soaked it in water and are feeding it??

Canned is not good at all, soaked dry food is fine, won't hurt them at all as long as it's good quality dry dogfood..

Edit : Oh, if it's Pedigree, it's not good for them at all. Get a good quality dogfood. This is the beginning of their little lives, you have to start them out on good food, not garbage.. You want them to have the best start possible, not start them eating sugar, corn and garbage...

I fed my dogs dry food when they were small, but wet food shouldn't hurt them. Although there is a wet pet food scare going around that has already killed several dogs. So I would think you should give your puppies dry food for now.

If they are only a week old, they are far too young to be eating solid food. When they are about 4 weeks old, you can start giving them soaked dry food, NOT canned food.

no it wont hurt them. but their main source of nutrition is their mother. watch for diarrhea, the food may be too rich for them. You can try feeding the mom away from the babies, that would give her a break too.

To be safe, call your vet to make sure, but I have a 1 yr old and we started him on wet food pretty early, but not right away, so I would definitely call for expert advise.
