Will left over amoxicillin be effective on my dogs ear infection2007-11-25 2:56:36

My dog has recurrent ear infections, I cant afford to take him to an allergist(ridiculous) so now my vet wont prescribe more meds until I take him AGAIN to see her so she can charge me 100 dollars plus to tell me what we both know.HE HAS ANOTHER EAR INFECTION!!

Sooo I have some left over amoxicillin and was thinking..maybe it could work without my money hungry vet being involved.

If the med is older then 5 to 6 months then it is not any good they get old quick go to your vet to get a fresh thing of med for him.Find another vet that will give you med that you need all the time. Dont use old meds he does need to get his ears rechecked again..The vets are only trying to help you.

Alot of vet most have free rechecks if yours dont then get one that does.

Well, how much would you dose him?? If you could figure that out, I suppose it could work.

BUT, I think you should find another vet. Also, perhaps your current vet is worried that there is an underlying problem with your dog and wants to look at him further. Hmmmmmm. I guess I would find another vet and take him in ONE more time.

left over amoxicillin? it depends on how old it was. but for future reference, always take the ENTIRE prescribed meds even if u feel like ur better. same for ur dog. that may be why he's sick again.

Recurrent ear infections are frustrating but you really need to see the vet and have the dog examined. An infection can be caused by a foreign body or a different cause than last time. You shouldn't have left over antibiotics anyway because the dog should have had the full course last time and used them all up. It may be why the infection is back.
