Will left over amoxicillin be effective on my dogs ear infection2007-11-25 2:56:36

Second, If you just give your dog what is left, your dog will not get a full course of the medication. What is likely to happen is...the dog may improve, as the weaker bacteria are killed right away.you run out of medication, the bacteria are still there, and the stronger more restistant ones are still thriving and the next thing you know, your dog will have a worse ear infection that could progress to worse.

PLEASE use antibiotics AS PRESCRIBED, for the full duration. Maybe there is an underlying reason your dog keeps getting ear infections. If this can be addressed, the infections would subside. Maybe the vet needs to use a different antibiotic? Whatever is going on, please don't play vet and just dose out medication.

First, you should not have any leftover antibiotic. All prescribed antibiotics should be administered until gone. If you have any leftover then it probably isn't enough to completely clear up the current ear infection. Take the dog to a different vet and get an answer as to why the dog has recurring ear infections. Is this going to be chronic or can it be resolved.

the only reason he has got the ear infection is because you didnt give him all the medicine the first place. anti-biotics makes you feel better after several days of taking the meds...but you have to keep taking it or keep giving it to the dog until all the meds have been taking that have been prescribed. One or two amoxicillin pill will make him feel better but the infection will return after several days. and also your dog could find resistence to the anti-biotic if you keep giving him one or two every time you "think" that he has and infection. so i would advise you to take the dog to the vet . unless you want to pay way more money when he finds resistance to the drug.
