Will left over amoxicillin be effective on my dogs ear infection
The money hungry physician that prescribed you that Amoxicillin makes 200k a year compared to most vets which make less then 60k a year.
Funny how that works considering the cost of schooling is approximately the same amount.
In any case:
You shouldn't have ANY leftover amoxicillin, because in order for that medication to be affective it has to be taken to it's full amount.
I'm sure that the costs for trying to medicate your dog and failing:
Then having to have the animals stomach pumped in exchange will cost you 3x what the treatment for solving the ear infection will.
If you're not happy about pricing: See another vet, but please don't insult the people that get into this field.
90% of the people in this field DO NOT become vets to make money and I'm really sick and tired of hearing this uneducated stereotype in both the veterinary/medical fields. Most vets are pretty much in everlasting/constant debt after graduation, and trying to provide the best care for pets, while paying for medical treatments, machines/equipment, tech salaries, building costs etc..
Was the antibiotic prescribed for you or your dog? If it's for you, then DON'T give it to him. If it's for the dog, then it might help a little. Is it liquid or tablet? If it's liquid, I'd say no. Liquid is usually only good for about 10 days after it's mixed. If it's tablets, then it might be ok. Did you check for an expiration date? By the way, usually when vets prescribe antibiotics, you're supposed to give them until they're gone, even if the condition seems better...so, if given correctly, you shouldn't have any left over. Unless the vet gave you extra, for some reason, or told you to stop. Vets need to do frequent re-checks to monitor the condition they're treating, in case they need to switch to a different treatment. It doesn't necessarily mean that they're money-hungry.
There shouldn't have been left over amoxicillan from the last ear infection because usually the bottle indicates that you need to finish all the medication, because otherwise the medicine will not clear up the infection completely, and it will pop up again. However, you will eventually need to get allergy treatment for your dog, because at some point amoxicillan won't help anymore.
I think you also need to find a better vet. There is no reason for your dog to see an allergist! A general vet should be able to provide allergy medication (he'd have to take it everyday), allergy shots, and appropriate ear medication (like Otomax).
