Will my dog change if we bring home a puppy2007-11-25 2:56:36

Well, I really want a Weimaraner puppy and my parents already said ok (After a very long time of showing that I am responsible enough for my very own dog). We currently have the sweetest 3 year old standard poodle who LOVES dogs. She is a big rough (Shes a big dog and the only dog friends she has is a tiny terrior and the fattest golden retriever so it is safe to say that she does fine with them). She is VERY active and LOVESSSS to play and is like a little human who needs attention, or a bone. Haha. Well, I know Weimaraner dogs need loves of attention and ALOT of excersise which is exactly how my dog is now. I am wondering if they will butt heads and if me dog will change and not love us as much as she does now since she loves other dogs SO MUCH. She also is very beta and I know Weim's are alfa. I'm wondering if a weimaraner will push her around too much. I know I should know all of this, but I cannot because you will never know until your dog meets one. I want for advice, experiences

It sounds like your dog is well socialized, so a new pup should not be a problem. They will work out pack order on their own. My suggestion is to get a male pup and make sure he gets neutered and she is spayed. Neutered male/spayed female combos seem to work out the best.

The best chance you have to make it work is to get a male dog. Two females will almost always have to fight about who should be alpha, so if you get a male pup that should reduce the pushing around. And your current dog isn't like people-- they don't stop liking you if you get another friend. They still love you unconditionally. You just need to remember to still pay a lot of attention to your current dog so she doesn't think she's done something bad.

Your dogs will have a turf battle over who will be the alpha of the pack (that includes dogs, people, cats, everybody in the home). How long it lasts between the dogs depends on them. It could get rough if both want to dominate.
