Will my jack russell calm down to be loyal and not so energetic when he grows up2007-11-25 2:56:38

he seems to have all the energy in the world and never gets tired out unless i take him to the park and for a walk for three hours. will he clam down to be one of those very obedient dogs who walks by their owners side and gets distracted by nothing naturally? or will i have to teach him to be like that

Jacks (as you have already read) are a high-energy breed. The high energy levels that make them fun to play with also make them tough to train. They are designed to bolt quarry without yield and to not back down when locating quarry. This also makes the breed tough to handle off-leash. If they see something that resembles quarry they are quite content to take off, regardless of your screams to stop. If you want him to act like a German Shepherd. You may never realize your dream. A happy Jack is a working jack. But, working him will only increase the problem as his energy levels rise from all of the physical activity. He will settle down a bit with age, but he is functioning as Reverend Russell intended. Reprogramming him will take an enormous effort on your part and may result in a unhappy pup.

Dogs will defintely calm down (a little) as they get older. However Jack Russells are working dogs and thus extremely energetic. I have known a few which were completely out of control. They were spolit silly as pups and became tiny monsters. But I've also seen some which were so well-trained and socialised they'd have a crowd of kids around them each time they went to the park.The Energizer Bunny is actually a Jack Russell wearing a costume. They really keep going.
