Would it be harmful to clip a great pyrenese down to the fur undercoat,this dog runs loose to protec2007-11-25 2:57:02

we have coyotes,bobcats and have seen on several occasions big cats

Answers:

Dont clip down the coat. It is used as protection against predators and the elements. Why are you wanting to cut it anyways? If it is due to grooming issues, you can buy an undercoat brush that will thin out the undercoat so that your dog can be a little cooler. Undercoat sheds just like the other fur but gets caught in the outer layer of fur resulting in a buildup that is hot, matted, and stinky. Good luck in whatever you do.

Not only does the coat protect the Great Pyrenees during a fight, they will sunburn without it. They are white skinned and will sunburn. The white coat also keeps them cool.

Think of it this way: Pyrs are a flock guardian breed -- developed for centuries to protect livestock. If the coat didn't protect them, why would they have it? ;-)

Coat makes the dog look bigger; not only is this intimidating to the predator, but it also gives them a false impression of where the dog's body really *is* under all that hair -- so when they time their bite/scratch to hit the body, they end up losing force in a mass of coat.

If you've ever seen the Kommondor, with its corded coat -- that coat exists for the exact same reason.

Keep the coat!
