Pack mentality, just as it would be in the wild for a pack of dogs living together. Someone is always the leader or the one in charge, the others submit and follow.

I would let them work it out on their own as long as it didn't get violent, all dogs will establish a pecking order in your home, and keep everyone in line. Just make sure they both know that you are absolute number one, not the male who is doing all of the humping, he has to be # 2.

If one dog is humping another dog (and it is not for reproduction), it is because he is stressed. Not the bad stress, the good stress. If they are playing and one mounts the other, it is a natural way to show excitement. My female puppy does it to her stuffed animals.

I love the "dominance" answers. I guess if a dog runs out the door before me he's got dominance issues too. Or maybe he just really, really has to pee! And my puppy pulls on her lead, does that mean she's dominant too? please.
