I have a dog who is diabetic. He was on the short needles and very thin ones to. But for some reason the vet changes himover to regular long and thick needles. I was wondering since my dog is only taking 5 units of insulin can I use any sygrines that I want and still get the same amount of units as I would if I was using the long and thick needles. My dog jumps everytime that I put the needle in him the long needle and I know it hurts him alot. And I myself is very scare of using the long needles it takes me a while to get the needle through his skin because its so tough. With the short needle I do it fast because my dog does not feel them at all. But the long needles he does. SO again can I use any sygrine and get the same amount of insulin. He is only taking 5 units and thats it. Can anyone help me please on this?

The vet may have changed the type of needle due to the thickness of your dogs skin. Most typically they use the fine ones however call your vet and ask him first. Secondly your dog is jumping because you are most likely injecting him with dulest end. Most people do not know the difference. If you look at the tip of your needle you will see what they call a beval and it will be slanted you want to make sure you have the beval up, meaning the "opening on top", if you flip the needle the other direction you can not see the opening which is beval down. The beval up is the sharpest and the proper way to give the injection. Make sure you rotate sites, and grab the skin up before you inject and make the stick quick. This will make it more comfortable for the dog. I hope this helps. I promise you will get the hang of it!

I wouldnt think the size would matter on the amount i would just go to a local feed store and get the syringes you think would be best.
You need syringes marked with insulin units, ordinary syringes are marked in mls. The 2 are not compatible. Go back to your vet and tell him you want the fine needles. It is cruel for the dog to have a big needle when there are fine (less painful!) ones. Other than that look at an online vet pharmacy and see if you can get some there.
I can't imagine why a thinner needle isn't adequate for your dog. My husband is diabetic and uses a very thin one for injections. Double check with your vet, explain your concerns and see what he can offer for you as an alternative.

It may be that he didn't have a supply of the smaller ones when you got them from him.

No. Different insulins use different syringes, I don't know why.

My cat is on PZI insulin which uses different syringes than the Humulin and another type of insulin he was also on.

Ask your vet if you can.Does he have the same insulin that he's always gotten or has the insulin changed?
