anti-itch ointment for dogs
My 5 yr. old Boxer has a "cone" on her head (and for the last few weeks after eye surgury). In the 5 days she has been wanting to scratch at her chin with her back foot day and night!
Obviosly she cant because of the cone.
There is nothing on her chin and I have been washing it with epson salts and ihbitane scrub from the vets. I have been cleaning her mouth after she eats and keeping the inside of the cone very clean too.
There are no bald patches, no dry spots or red spots.nothing I can see on her chin.
I was wondering if I could put some type of ointment on the area like lanacane creme to give my poor girl some relief!!
Ant ideas on something TOTALLY safe for a dog?
Answers:Boxers are busy, as you may know and even more interesting with a cone one her head. If you are seriously concerned you can put benadryl cream on her chin, or 1 mg per pound of dog of a benadryl tablet, a 25 mg should do just fine and take the edge off. But don't make this a habbit, if itching continues, call your vet. But knowing that she is Boxer tells me all I need to know. I have one too. LOL! Good Luck!!
Sounds like a nervous habit or the skin is dry and itchy from you washing it. Dogs have very sensitive skin as it's only one layer. Don't put lotion on it because human lotion would dry it out even more since our ph balance is different. I would call the vet and see if they recommend anything like Cortizone cream or something that is anti-itch and safe incase they lick it off.
Benadryl would help for the itching. Here's a site with the dosage by weight.

It could be a possibility that your dog might have fleas, becuase fleas are sometimes know to move toward the head of an animal.
You can give her Benadryl, or put some cortizone cream on her chin.
