Why does the pup have to be free? If you can't afford to buy a dog even though from a animal shelter they only cost about $75 give or take a few bucks, then you have no business having a dog at all! Pets that are taken care of the right way cost money. Proper food, preventative medicine like heart-worm pills and flea killer, yearly vet check ups and shots, and emergency vet care.
So, if you can't afford to buy the dog, then you can't afford to take care of it.
Try your local animal shelter or humane society - they probably have a dog you're looking for.

There is an animal shelter in Uxbridge Ma and the gentleman that runs it is very nice. I got my dog from him acouple of years ago. There is also the sterling shelter that has some really nice dogs up for adoption
