anyone out there successfully house break a chihuahua2007-11-25 2:57:45

I have housebroken mine but she takes 4 ever finding a spot outside to use the bathroom :(

i have with mine but he's a male and he goes REALLY quick. however i do have a female jack russell terrier mix and she takes a LONG time. i though males took longer because they mark their territory but it must be opposite! i totally understand how u feel! i hate those cold nights when your bare footed because u dont think it will take long! lol

Chihuahuas are persnickety they take their own good time at everything because they are worried to be stepped on or agressed. Just pick her up and plop her down near a low bush; one she can sort of go into to do her business.

Yes its quite easy with WeeWee Pads. I always have them down in case he cant hold it. Let him out very first thing in the morn and right before bed though. They prefer toi go outside to keep their territory marked.

If you were a dog and had your choice of 'hurrying' and returning inside or of enjoying the opportunity to sniff, wander, and check out the scenery, what would you choose? My suggestion always is to find the spot for her . take her out on a leash and stand STILL! She will have the circumfrence around you to sniff . eventually, she will get bored and do her business. Stay still, stay quiet, and be patience. Use a command, if you want, and don't take her for scenic walks or playtime until business is done. Eventually, she'll get the picture that hurrying brings the good stuff .. praise only after she's completely done! This is how I train ALL dogs, regardless of breed, and it works always with patience and consistency. Good luck!

If she is housebroken, why worry if she takes a little longer finding the right spot? It is better to let them stay out a little longer than just the normal potty time any way.
