So much depends on the breeding. Dobermans are great dogs! However, their are so many ill bred ones available, that one must be very careful about the breeder, and which pup they get.. I wouldn't recommend them for toddlers, though..Wait until children are at least 4 years old, so that by the time the Dobe is mature, the child is 6 or so..

Also, the owner must be VERY dedicated to socializing and training these sensitive and intelligent dogs..VERY!.they are certainly not a dog to allow to raise/train itself..they need a lot of family interaction, and outings..

Never choose one without meeting the parents..Choose the happy, sociable puppy, not the bold, struts-his-stuff pup, nor the one that is shy..but choose the one that plays well with the others, and is outgoing and friendly.

Make sure any children in the house know how to be gentle with animals. Don't let them harrass it in any way. Even a very stable dog with good training can bite if it's hurt or afraid.

Yeah they are! they can be incredibly sweet and playful. But u myt want to start with a puppy, so u train it to behave n frendly. My frend has the sweetest doberman, n is a major suck! dobeys are really intellegent and are willing to learn. Just be nice.

Well, it depends. if you are experienced with large agressive-tendancy breeds, then yes, they can make wonderful pets. They are very loyal to their family. The problems usually arise from them being over-protective of their loved ones and hurting someone else. You need to make sure to socialize them very well with strangers and new places constantly. Dont worry about them losing their proteciveness of you if they are well socialized, it will still be there, only it will be less likely of the dog "protecting" you or someone in your family that doesnt need protecting. DO NOT try to teach it to be more protective. these kinds of dogs dont need that. you will end up with an uncontrolable dog if you do this. They need firm but not abusive training. They are very smart and willing to please. The only thing that would concern me about it being a :family: dog is that you need to make very sure that you getit from a reliable breeder. these dogs if not properly bred are at risk of a rare condition in which their brains will outgrow their skulls and the pain and pressure of it will make the dog literally lose its mind and it could attack anyone for no reason at all just trying to get its head to stop hurting.
