are indoor dogs (and I mean completely indoor) less succeptable to fleas2007-11-25 2:58:53

My yorkie is an indor furball. he absolutely HATES going outside. (this if for you who will say to take him outside). when i do, he walks 5 feet and then he pulls back and wants right back inside. i have to problem ith that as he goes potty on a wee wee pad in the balcony. (it's acctually more convenient for me during the cold, hot, or rainy days). i have a bit house so otherwise he gets plenty of exercise

but i was just wondering if he is less likely to get fleas if he's indoors like 97% of the time.

Hi yes he is less likely to get fleas unless you have other dogs visiting you or a cat that goes out & comes in at will.I would say that your pet has a serious social problem in the fact that he doesn't like the outdoors but if you hve never socialized him/her then this is a problem that you yourself have reatedfor yourself.

You have to consider the wider picture with socializing pets as there will be times when your pet may fall ill & being that he/she hates the outdoors if this pet needs to stay in a vets for whatever reason,this will put a uge strain on the dog & stress it out in times when that is the last thing he/she needs.Regards Jakehttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/petssecond.

its like you don't go out in the rain and you wont get wet. yes he wont get fleas, unless you already have some in the house. you can also get him vaccinated 4 that.but not going out will eventually make him sick. it's unnatural for dogs to stay in all the time. maybe there is something that scares him outside try finding it out. take him out, take him for a good run, play throw n fetch with him. just make his outings more interesting that's all

Fleas can be passed via humans onto dogs, but it's highly unlikely that it will happen. Keep him treated though just in case. You can get Front line which is a drop formula which goes on the neck, see you vet about it. I'm more interested in why your dog doesn't like going outside? I know that my parents dogs don't like being outside alone, bless them, their scared of the big birds flying over. What is he like when you take him out on walks? How old is he? Believe it or not, you can teach old dogs new treats. When you want him to go outside, try this, carry him outside and suck the door behind you so he has no way of running back in. I take it he will just sit there, so walk out in front of him with a treat and call him to come to you, don't be too far out in front at first, when he comes to you, give him the treat, then take a few more paces back, do this until your a fair way in to the garden, then give him all the praise he deserves. Keep at this, but never leave him outside alone until he's completely happy to do it alone. My dog is the other way around, she loves it outdoors, it's hard to get her in side again, the rain does the job though, straight out and straight in!!

I think he is less likely to get fleas if he is living inside your place. The reason is because he doesn't have contact with other animals. Let's see if someone else has a different opinion.

He is less likely to get fleas because he is not in the elements as much. It's outdoor dogs that need flea/tick stuff more regularly, because outside is where the insects usuallt are. Plus, stray cats and dogs are where most fleas reside, so the less the dog is outside, the less of a chance he has of getting fleas and ticks.

It will be hard for your dog to get fleas if he is indoors all the time.

I really suggest taking him outside for walks, wether he cries or pulls back. Dogs (no matter what breed) need excerise. Some don't need a lot but even 15 minutes a day is good. He can't stay fit if all the excercise he gets is inside. Try just taking him out in the backyard for 15 minutes with a leash on him then gradually take him outside the front door and down the street, he will begin to like it.
