can westies get cysts2007-11-25 2:59:43

I took my dog to the vet b/c of a lump on his side. was given medicine and told to return for surgery if not better in 1 week. Wouldn't the vet have drained a cyst? Told me it could possibly be a tumor. The medicine is not helping the lump gp down and now I am getting nervous.

Answers:

Unfortunately any dog can get cysts. Some breeds may be be more prone to them than others.

How long ago did you take the dog to the vet? . Sometimes it can take awhile before the you any improvement. I hope your dog gets better and won't be needing surgery. Good luck

I think Westies are notorius for skin issues. Our first Silky had cysts and they were not "drained." We were told that if they got bigger or changed shape that it would be good to have them removed, but they never did throughout his 14 years. He was fine!
Our Westie had nearly perfect skin and coat, unlike so many others of the breed - but she did have a few cysts that were left alone (other than keeping and eye on them for changes) for most of her 14 years. Other than our initial concerns, they were not a problem.
Any dog can have cysts. If you do not trust your vet, you could get a second opinion to ease your mind. He may not need surgery at all.
