Answers:You could try calling your local Humane Society and asking if they know of any free or low cost vaccination clinics. I know you said that the Humane Society is expensive, but they also are the best place to call to get information regarding veterinary care in your area. You may also want to check your yellow pages and see if there is a mobile vet or try calling around to feed stores. I live in San Antonio, Texas and many of the feed stores here sell vaccines and on certain weekends have low cost vaccinations. The only shot your pup will have to get from a veterinarian is his rabies vaccine. By law only a licensed veterinarian can administer that vaccine, at least that's how it is in Texas. If you find a feed store that does sell vaccines you should give your pup the Distemper, Parvo, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus, Lepto combo shot. (All of those vaccines are in one shot) Some places call it a "5-way shot" but a veterinarian will most likely refer to it as a DHLPP/CV. Puppies should get 4 of those vaccines. The first, second, and third shot should be given 3 weeks apart from each other and the last should be given 4 weeks after the third shot. There is an organization here called the Responsible Pet Owners Alliance. You may want to see if there is something like that in your area. They often do free vaccines (or low cost) and many of them also have low cost spay and neuter programs. Another option is to look into pet insurance. There are a couple of different providers of this type of insurance and they have plans that range from a few dollars a month on up, depending on the plan you select. The two that come to mind are VPI,Veterinary Pet Insurance, (www.petinsurance.com) and ASPCA Pet Insurance (www.aspcapetinsurance.com). I think that there are others, you may want to search on Google for "pet insurance" and see what kind of info you get. Don't get discouraged by high prices. Remember, the vets are running a business too. Just think how high your hospital bills would be if insurance wasn't around. At least you are providing a good home for your pup and not just ignoring his health care needs. That's a lot more than other people can say. Good luck and congrats on your new puppy!
We live in a small county in Tennessee, and our vet is the lowest priced around. He keeps his cost low because he owns the building, has a small staff and is the only good vet in town. People come to him from other counties because he is very good. This is not always the case when you find a cheap vet. The saying you get what you pay for is often true. You can buy the shots yourself for les than $5. Saves a lot of money.
I have seen many signs at various pet stores for "mobile" vets who come around on Sundays and will give pets basic vaccinations at lower cost than a veterinary clinic. Of course there may be times when only a licensed veterinarian is what your puppy and grown dog will need. I am not making apologies for vet costs and they do have the same amount of education and training as your doctor does. They have to have expensive equipment, office people to handle calls and make appointments and veterinary technician's to assist them with animals. It isn't as though they are just pocketing your money for ski trips and such. I believe most have incomes less than $100,000 a year and many firefighters, policemen and such have comparable incomes. Many have wives, children, homes with mortgages, etc. Many also go on for advanced training in the specialty fields of veterinary medicine too.
