dog losing weight2007-11-25 3:00:59

my dogs is a 2 yr old mixed german sherperd. We live with another dog who is very jealous and will sometimes attack her. This is nothing new though. She is well aware of what not to do in order to stay out of the other dogs way (also female). Recently though she is starting to lost weight. She is not throwing up or anything but is eating less. SHe still loves to go running but we can see her ribs now. The vet took blood tests and x-rays and found nothing except that there is a high wbc and that she has a temperature. He suspects there is an infection but cannot tell us where it is. I have foudn through my research though that your wbc can go up due to a temperature. It was quite a negative experience with this vet. We spent $400 to find out nothing and feel he might have led us to the x-rays for our money. At this point i don't know what else to do. Does n e one know what might be wrong

Answers:

DO you feed the two dogs at the same time, in the same place..that could be it.the alpha will not let the other eat..I would try feeding in different locations, a spot where the dogs can't get to the other ones food..see if that helps..you should also talk to a different vet.

I would get a second opinion. It doesn't sound like the vet you went to gave you any answers.
If this vet can't give you an answer, find a different one who can. Ask friends and family for suggestions of vets they have had good experiences with. Just cuz someone is a vet, doesn't mean they will do the right thing. Word of mouth suggestions is a good way to find someone you will trust.
If your feeding them at the same time, your females are competing over the food, and the alpha female well just gorge herself to keep the other one from eating.
