2 male dogs, both nuetured. one is 8 years old, 35 lbs. the other is 1 year old, 70 1lbs. The older dog has never tolerated the young one very well. he has always growled when he came near and never had much to do with him.

Now that the younger dog is growing up, he is attacking the older dog. he will attack him in what I beleive is an effort to gain domonaince. the older dog is now afraid of him. I see the younger one watching the older one all the time with bad intentions.

how to stop this? I no longer leave them alone together and I have to watch the younger dog constantly. getting rid of either dog is not an option.

Answers:

Individual dogs can take a dislike to other dogs, just like some people hate and don't get along with some people on sight. It's not logical, it's not something they care to "work out" or change.

It's the same with dogs, some just will not settle down even after the alpha dog is picked. Just because one of the dogs wins the alpha spot, doesn't mean the other dog won't constantly pick fights until he wins the spot.

Also, these can be fights to the death. I personally have witnessed a pair of pet dogs (not trained fighters) fight until one died. (3 firefighters, a can of mace, and a garden hose couldn't seperate them) And even if it isn't, you are still facing steep, never ending vet bills.

This can and does go on indefinitely.

I'm not saying give it up, I'm saying you need professional help. Let an experienced trainer assess the situation and decide on what to do from there, based on the advise you get. This isn't something you can or should handle alone. It's not as expensive as you think, and you will be saving countless money on vet bills.
