Answers:

No Dog, Male Or Female, Should Be Bred Before They Are Two Years Old.

why? because 85% of heritable defects or diseases will show up by the 2nd B-day.

AND. do not forget that both M and F dogs need specific genetic testing to screeen for heritable and infectious disease =before= they are bred.

these include, AT MINIMUM:

* OFA or PennHIP radiographs of joints, including hips and knees in Poodles (hip dysplasia and patellar luxation are pretty common)

* CERF certificates: these are exams of the eye, performed by a board-certified specialist, NOT a regular vet; they are only good for 12 mos, so they need to be renewed every yr. Any breeding dog, M or F, should have a current CERF-certificate.

those are in all breeds; in addition, if the dog has never been shown and has no Championship, a breeder or judge or handler who is an expert in the breed should examine the dog and make sure that they meet the breed standard.

Ur own vet should do a thorough exam for any anomalies, like a heart-murmur, elbow fragment, or other physical problem that is heritable (any breed).

in POODLES:

Sebaceous Adenitis is a skin-disease that is heritable, ugly and painful; it can be fatal, or chronic and severe. the dogs have a very poor quality of life.
