10 gallon aquarium
There are many smaller fish that would do well in a ten in the right combinations and amounts such as many varieties of tetras such as cardinals, neons, head and tail lights and more, as long as they don't exceed 2 in at full growth. Others may include cory catfish, white cloud minnows, guppies, platties, molies, barbs, a betta if not kept with fin nippers or other bettas unless female which can be kept with other females, I would only do 2 for a ten gal though. I would only pick fish that do not exceed 2.5 inches or so that are compatible with any others you pick. A smaller school of tetras with a cory might be nice for example.
You can find out more useful information in the link that is provided in my profile. This site will also tell more about the fishless cycling process.
I enourage you to be patient with the cycling process and to not rush into buying fish right away because you may find yourself sorry that you did.
Oh and you mentioned that you had a 30 gal? If so, use your biofilter media or some substrate from that tank in the ten to help establish the neccessary bacteria colonies that will break down nitrates quickly and efficiently, cutting down your cycling time drasticaly.
Enjoy your new tank. :)
A betta would be very happy in a ten gallon tank. He could also have some well selected friends. I had mine in with 4 harlequin rasboras. They got along splendidly. You do have to be cautious with what type of fish you put in with a betta. For instance, avoid long finned fish and fish that tend to nip the fins of other fish. YOu could also get a nice looking snail to help with the clean up in your tank. Or you could get a few african dwarf frogs. They are really cute little critters.
After you have cycled the tank (Nutrafin Cycle is great for this)
