Black spots on my Jellybean Chiclid

Black spots on my Jellybean Chiclid2007-11-24 23:10:19

I noticed that my African Jellybean Chiclid has some black spots. I noticed them a couple of times before this too. It usually came when the other Jellybean I have was beating up on him. Then they went away. Well now this Jellybean has taken dominance over the other, b/c he is larger. He has developed the black spots again. Does anyone know why these occur, and what I can do to get rid of them??

Answers:

As mentioned, they're not an African breed. Jellybean's are actually a cross between a female blood parrot and a male convict. Black spot is common in parrot fish. It can be a sign of stress-from being bullied, poor water quality, overcrowded tank, or a sign it could also be a sign of breeding.

I would suggest first checking your water quality, and if the ammonia and nitrites are at 0 ppm, and nitrates under 20 ppm, then I would assume it could be from the other fish bullying it. They should go away on their own, not much you can do about it. Here's a good site with some info on jellybeans and parrot fish, just browse through the forum, there's a few topics on black spot there as well:

i think thatz odd. but then again wat do i kno. watz a chiclid?
Patterns on cichlids can change/appear depending on their mood and stress levels. It's perfectly normal.
I think youve been ripped off and they sold you a mutt you should ask the vet and sue the seller
It is really difficult to say if these dots are "normal" This is because Jellybeans are an odd human creation of unknown fish. Several aquarists have their hunches as two which species were bred to create this new one, but no official information has been released.
