Boiling Gravel

Boiling Gravel2007-11-24 23:10:21

I was looking thru some of my old aquarium stuff in the garage today and found some old gravel that I remember using a few years ago. I also found my old 10 gallon and 29 gallon tanks from years and years ago. I was wondering if it was ok to boil the gravel before I put it in one of the aquariums? Will the color fade? Will it realese anything harmful? I always boil my local pea pebbles that I get out of the river but I don't know what will happen if I boil this stuff.

It seems to be the standard gravel that you could buy at Wal-mart or a chain pet store. I want to boil it because I don't remember why I took it out of the tank a few years ago. I just want to make sure that it isn't carrying any diseases before I put it in the tank.

Answers:

yes you absolutely can and in fact should, that way there is no bad bacteria on it

As for the tank, i would use white vinegar, pour it on, let it sit for about 2 hours and then wash it out until you don't smell the vinegar anymore with warm water

Hope that helps

Good luck

EB
