How large is your aquarium?
You'll need to now how large the fish you want will get. A good rule for fish that don't get very big (3 inches and under) is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water. This rule doesn't apply to fish that grow larger than 3-4 inches.
Once you know what fish you want and if they'll fit in your aquarium with plenty of room as adults, you'll need to know if they will be compatible with each other.
The most important thing is to research all the fish you want before adding them without any prior knowledge.
The most important thing to do aside from research is to not listen to people who recommend the One Inch Per Gallon Rule because it's highly inaccurate.
1)First you have to take into account The type of fish you want. (Tropical community? aggressive? semi-aggressives? oddballs?)
2)Then you have to see what they're compatible with.
3)Calculate the amount of space/gallons each fish will need and this varies greatly depending on the aggressiveness, size and personality of the fish.
4)Figure out the hardiness of the fish you get, whether you'll be able to take care of their needs like specific temperatures, pH levels, salinity (for brackish tanks), etc
