Bought new tank, dirty bird stuff how to clean it
I just bought a new tank to see if I'm able to keep a goldfish or two in a happy environment. This tank was out in the open, and it is very smelly and dirty because of the birds dust in the shop. I was going to wash it in my tub with just water, and possibly baking soda or vinegar. I'm not sure what the safest method is...is vinegar good? The other fish holding equipment I bought only needed water...but I think this tank requires more cleaning.
Answers:Water should get it out if it is only dust. Vinegar would work well too. Just don't EVER use soap, bleach, or household cleaning sprays. One tiny trace of it could kill your fish, even if you say you "washed it out well"
Good luck!

i would try dish detergent. but make sure you clean it out very good. then get a gallon of distilled water from the grocery store and rinse it with that. then you wont have any water marks on the tank. if its really hard to get off you would be fine with the baking soda.
i would use only water to play it safe.
Honestly i would use bleach. Just get it really good and clean then rinse it out. Let it sit for a day or two, then rinse it out really good again. then put your water in and let that cycle for a few days then add fish
Hi Eladear-Vinegar is great, white if possible but the brown malt variety is ok too, [no soap or other commercial cleaner whatsoever] As long as it is glass you can also use rock salt as a scouring agent for those stubborn 'welded-on' bits! Stand the tank on an old towel while you are cleaning out in the tub-this will protect the tank if you have a porcelain tub or the tub if it's plastic!
As an additional precaution it's a good idea to fill it with water-preferably outside & let it stand for a couple of days just to make sure it's watertight, you can never be too careful-even with a brand new tank.
If you haven't already seen it the attached link should assist you greatly in your endeavours once you have a clean tank.
