Breeding Bettas

The males can stay together basically for their entire lives as long as you never separate them. Once separated even for a day they will begin to fight so keep that in mind.
Best of luck and stick with it, you'll have baby betta before you know it!

I use to breed betas all the time when I was about 16. Are you sure you have a male and a female? Just to make sure, females are duller in color and don't have as long as a tail (males have some too but there are lots of different bettas such as long tail bettas, short tail, moon tails, etc.) anyway, you should put them into a breeding tank which you can get at pets mart or something like that for about 5 bucks. ITs a little plastic tank with a divider in teh middle. Anyway, to accomplish this, let the female and male stay in each side of the tank with teh divider in so they get used to each other. When the male produces bubbles on top of the water, he is ready. you can then remove the divider and watch carefully because they sometimes will kill the female. THey will begin a little "dance" and the male will cover himself all over the females body. After they mate, the eggs will go into the bubbles and remove the females because males will be very aggresive after mating. So, hopefully if this happens, you will have babies within weeks. Its cool to see the male pick up the babies with its mouth and brings them to the surface for air =) but unfortunately, not all will survive. I hope that this helps you in some way and I really do hope you succeed!! good luck!
I had good luck using a twenty gallon long tank planted at one end for the female to hide. I use a clear separator in the tank to keep the male and female apart. When the male starts building his bubble nest I carefully take out the separator. They usually take care of things themselves after that. Before you start make sure both fish are conditioned with good food like frozen beef heart found in pet stores. When the two breed under the bubble nest the male will drive the female away while he gathers the eggs and spits them up into the bubbles. They may breed several times but when they are done remove the female.
