To prevent further algae growth:

1. Allow your tank only 10 hours of light a day, whether by tank light or by sunlight.

2. Increase water changes if you have to, in order to keep nitrates low. The reason for algae growth is the excess nitrates in your tank which are allowing algae to thrive.

Here is a really good page on other measures to combat algae:

If you do get an algae-eating fish, however, do be aware that you will have to keep it even after the algae growth has been taken care of, which will mean buying algae discs and wafers for it to eat.

It's algae, scrape off as much as you can and check the Nitrate and Phosphate concentrations in your tank. If either of them are high buy one of those Nitrate and/or Phosphate "pillows" or something similar to try and reduce it.

If possible increase the number of plants in the water to try and out compete the algae.

Most algae eaters, which several people have suggested, are not really cold water fish and although they will live in cool water I'd try not to let the temperature drop too low. Don't expect too much from them either, they are not nearly as good at clearing algae as many people seem to think and some of them, as they get bigger can become quite aggressive and seem to prefer meat to algae.
