Other fish to consider are goldfish and Mollies. Bother are great mates.
Females Usually work together, just make sure you have a big enough tank so that they dont have to see eachother at all times. Somtimes Females will fight at first, to detirmine the "pecking order" if this continues for more than a few minutes, they will ovesly not work to gether. Males together will kill each other, wel males and females will mate, and then the male will kill her after he mates if you dont get her out of there. So only females are compatable really.
2 males or a male and female can NOT live in the same bowl, they will fight and one will kill the other. 2 Females however can be in a tank together and be fine, but most people don't want the less colorful females. If you want to get him a friend, try getting a 10 gallon aquarium and a couple very peaceful, not long finned fish to put in also. Make sure to have lots of hiding places though since even then some Betta's are territorial and could potentially harass the others.
Only one male should be kept in a tank but they can be housed with three short finned female bettas.
A small fishbowl is not the best way to keep a betta. However because of their air breathing organ a betta is one of the few fish they may survive in an unfiltered fish bowl.
