Answers:

You should be fine, right now i have blue gouramis with a few tiger barbs and they do fine. So i would just put them back in the tank and see what happens. Fish are just like humans and have different personalities, so some might get along and some might not. But i think that he will.

Monitor the situation and see if aggresion takes place again.

If not, gouramis are of the same family as the betas, although they are not as territorial or aggressive.

To answer your question, your gourami should be just fine by himself. Barbs however can be nippy and aggressive themselves, I would rather pair the gourami with more peaceful fish, such as tetras.

You'll just have to watch over them. Gouramis stake out their own territory and a barb will also be aggressive. It is possible that the gourami killed a male barb as they are more likely to do so. To get the full understanding of how your fish act try turning off all the lights in the room (including the aquarium one) and sit away or on the opposite wall from the tank so that the fish won't be able to see you. Then just watch to see how the fish react when you aren't there ;) They act much differently when they see people.
