Can fish swim backwards

Can fish swim backwards2007-11-24 23:10:33

i was wondering because i never see my Beta fish swimming backwards

Answers:

that depends on what you mean. swimming backwards or swimming on their backs.

every fish can swim a bit backwards, to back off for example. some more, some less.

extreme backwards swimming is a part of swordtail courtship ritual.

only few cat fishes can swim on their backs as far as i know.

no, but they turn around and swim in the opposite direction
* The beluga whale can swim backwards.

* Most fish can not swim backwards.

* Some aquarium fish, however, like the ghost knife and the crosshatch triggerfish, are able to swim backwards.

* Some electric fish 鈥?and I think the ghost knife, above, is among them 鈥?are capable of swimming backwards. In order to eat, they must first swim past their prey, detect it, and then reverse in order to eat. Evolutionarily, therefore, it鈥檚 important that they have this ability.

* Due to the morphology of their fins, sharks can not only NOT swim backwards, they are incapable of stopping.

* Dolphins can 鈥渟wim backwards鈥?but this is a case of semantics, I believe, and not what you picture in your mind when you imagine 鈥渁 dolphin swimming backwards.鈥?Check out this photo to see what I mean.

Have you ever seen a fish swimming backwards?

They can if they have mobile fins on the sides of their bodies. My betta has swum backwards before, but seems to prefer going forwards unless he's really stuck.
I have ten fish ... two goldfish, one scat, two oscars, and five tetras ... they ALL 'swim backwards' ... if your Beta isn't 'swimming backwards' you may have it in too small a 'container' and because of it's 'lovely tail' it doesn't swim backwards because it could be 'injured.' If you have your beta in a ten gallon tank with other fish, it could be 'not swimming backwards' for the same reason ... but I'm guessing that you have ONLY the one Beta, and you have it in a 'tiny' container ... try getting it a large fishbowl or small aquarium with some 'plants' and your Beta will start doing all kinds of 'neat things' ... including hiding in the plants so well, you'll wonder 'where it went.'
My betta kind of drifts backwards at a slight angle. Also, I have seen some of my gouramis and t-barbs swim or dart backwards. Im not talking like swimming a foot or more...more like an inch or two.
no
yes fish can swim backward but only certain kinds of fish!! i have a 55 gallon fish tank and most of my fish swim backwards for no reason ! hope i helped bye
no cuz the gills point back and the water comes out from the gills through the back so is they swim backwards the water
