Can my blind goldfish survive

Can my blind goldfish survive2007-11-24 23:10:47

I have a 60 litre fish tank with a selection of goldfish. I noticed that one of my goldfish was being attacked and had lost both its eyes. The other fish were then attacking the fleshy holes that were left. I was really horrified and have separated the fish from the others. Can it survive and is there anything that I can do such as medicate that will increase its chance of survival? If this fish does survive and its wounds heal, can I put another fish in its tank as company or alternatively can it be reintroduced to the main tank? If no to both of these options, will it be ok living alone? Thanks.

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your fish. If you put him in a tank with out any decorations and with good filtration he might be alright. You might also medicate with a broad spectrum antibiotic to prevent infection from setting in. Like people, animals can adapt to being blind. If you want to get him a companion animal, I would suggest either some mystery snails, a small species of cory catfish, or some other small nonaggressive fish; maybe a trio of guppies, or a small school of neon or cardinal tetras. It is important that he not have to compete for food, or need to defend himself agressive tank mates. Good luck...Patricia

Yes, it would considering it will run into the walls all of the time!
This exact thing happened in my 50 gallon tank, we had to kill it. If it was being attacked when it had its eyes, imagine what the other fish would do to it now hat it has no eyes. If he was in a tank by himself, he could survive, or in your new tank with a total non agressive smaller fish, I dont think there are any medications for his eyes though.
sorry that happened to you and that's not really something to joke about for other people that are answering. since it's a fish, I'd say there not much you can do. Maybe you can ask one of the pet-store workers. But I really wouldn't leave it in pain.
best thing to do is flush it. there no chance that it would have a good life now.

and if you have all gold fish in there I think the hurt one probly had pop eye I dont see any other way for goldfish to pluck its eyes out.

keep an eye ( not to close you now what your fish do to eyes) open for pop eye with the others.

this may be sad for you but I would re leave it from it's pain='(
well best to stab it to relive it from the pain of missing its eyeballs. its like torture to him. so just relive him of the pain. but if u really wanna keep him then just let him live by himslf just itll be a pain to get him to eat for all i know.
