Can you have a small pleco in a tank with small cichlids2007-11-24 23:10:54

i have small cichlids in my 30 g i have 2 plecos in my 60

can i move one to my 30 g

so he can clean the tank hes small like 3 inches but my small cichlids are like 1-2 inches will he eat them?

No it won't eat the cichild, but your pleco will be needed to move back to the 60 gallon tank at some point, just keep that in mind. A 30 gallon will be outgrown by most common plecos, so when your pleco starts reaching about 7 or 8 inches in lenght, move it back over to the 60. Plecos are fine with most fish until they are about 5 inches (at that size they will eat small tetras and other mid-tank dwellers).

A common pleco will outgrow your 30g in no time though!

I would be very careful. Cichlids grow fast and are very agressive - they may gang up on your placo and kill him. Keep an eye on the tank if you decide to do it, and move the placo if you see any signs of injury to him or the cichlids.

it should be fine i have two rubberlipped plecos in my 40 gallon central american cichlid tanks and i have a common pleco in my firemouth and also one in my oscar tank. and all of my plecos are 4 inchs or smaller. not all cichlids are that mean.
