Can you house cichlit parrot fish with African Cichlids2007-11-24 23:10:55

I don't think I would want to house baby parrots with African cichlids but what if they were all the same size?

The Parrot cichlids are from south america. I was advised to not put mine in with my Africans because the Africans are a little bit more aggressive, and since the Parrot cichlids can't really open their mouth, the Africans can most definitely kill the parrot.

if the babies were large enough not to fit in the A. cichlids mouths, and you had appropriate gallonage and number of caves to hide in,...you should be fine. They are both cichlids.

Ultimately, no matter what you do, or how careful you try to be, there's always one of those African Cichlids that will try to take over the whole tank. Your best bet, since both fish are a type of Cichlid, would be to keep a lot of hiding places. Make sure all are growing at the same rate. About once every week or two, when your cleaning the tank, switch around the decorations to break apart any territories that are established by any certain fish. I would go as far as to keep extra decorations on hand and rotate them out periodically.

The integration of these two types of fish can be done, but it has to be done with care. Keep a lot of hiding spots, a lot of decorations and plants (fake or real, but preferably real) and keep on breaking up those territories.
