I've heard that you can't, the fighting fish will eat them, well try to anyway and then you might lose both of them :(
A male beta (fighting fish) only gets aggressive to other male betas. You can mix them with any fish that can survive in the same fishbowl (salinity, temperature, etc.), just no more than one male beta.
I would recommend against adding a female beta as well, unless you are able to separate the adults from potential babies...they are cannibals! My sister has horrified to see that happen in her fish tank.
