Cichlid question

Cichlid question2007-11-24 23:11:01

I recently took over my cousins 55 gallon cichlid aquarium. When I recieved it it was very open i.e. only 2 plastic plants, after doing a little research on my own I built a rock structure taking up about 1/3 of the tank and put in another plant, I have a bubble stone (looks like a rock) filter, hood light, heater, and salt etc however instead of keeping to themselves in the tank in the rocks they constantly follow each other. why is this? should I change something also I was wondering what kind they are all he said was african the one is ALL orange w/ a black eye and the other is a faint blue w/ a horizontal stripe they are both about an inch. Sorry for the book just needed help

Answers:

In the wild they would swim in shoals as a protective measure until they set up a territory for breeding. Give them plenty over holes and cover and they will settle down as they grow.

I own a pet and aquatic store

well first off how long ago did you add all the new decor? when you add something new to the tank, what happens is your fish loose their "territory". african cichlids are very territorial, and if it was very recent, theyre probably goin around with eachother till they designate their new spots. i would also check to see if either of them have spots on their anal fin (check on the bottom of the fish, fin clostest to the tail). if there are spots, its a boy, no spots its a girl.
